The Self-help Physical Strength Program (SPS Program) for older people

ABSTRACT

The Self-help Physical Strength Program (SPS Program) was developed in Japan by Hatachi Industry Co., Ltd. and Shizuoka University. SPS Program aims at helping seniors (active elderly, so-called specific elderly, and elderly with support needs levels 1 and 2) in extending their healthy-life expectancy by improving their physical abilities necessary to live more functionally independent lifestyles. This program is made of three types of activity: (i) take a Self-help Physical Strength Test (SPS Test); (ii) listen to the guidance and advice of a self-help physical abilities improvement coach; and (iii) practice exercise to improve your self-help physical abilities. Their study in Thailand funded by JICA from May 2015 will also be discussed.
