Mixed-Orientation Marriages (MOMs) in China: A Response to Heteronormativity and Filial Piety

Abstract

The presentation will be about the field work experience and preliminary analysis of 68 in-depth interviews to explore why Chinese men who are sexually attracted to men and unknowing heterosexual women entered into mixed-orientation marriages (MOMs). The Chinese patriarchy of filial piety (particularly continuation of family lineage through marriage) and gender inequality is one of the fundamental drives for both man and women in this research to enter into marriage, MOMs for men specifically.
