Shifted Lens: Triumphs and Challenges of an Innovative Approach to University Student Support

Seminar no. 1351
24 September 2025 Time: 12:30 – 13:30 hrs.

Speaker: Timethius Terrell (Visiting Scholar, Mahidol University)

Although in recent decades there have been global movements to end sexual and gender-based violence, Thai universities have yet to develop institutionalized approaches to educating students on boundary-setting, teaching them to give/deny or recognize consent, and debunking myths on the causes of sexual violence. Thus, while a small subset of universities have begun developing networks to support students after such instances, preventative measures remain scarce or otherwise ineffective. In this presentation, I outline an evidence-based curriculum that centers peer-led education to teach Thai students about sexual violence, sexual consent, and safety planning at university and in society. Additionally, I share the proposed structure of a three-month pilot during which a cohort of 8-10 Thai university students are trained on these key concepts before facilitating interactive (English or Thai-language) workshops for fellow students. During the pilot, the curriculum would be further refined using participatory methods, student skill-building and knowledge gains will be measured using pre- and post-workshop surveys, and the experiences of the Peer Advocate cohort would be tracked using qualitative questionnaires at regular intervals. The results of the pilot would provide evidence on the effectiveness of this curriculum, establishing an innovative approach to sexual violence prevention that could transform policy and practice at Thai universities and shift Thai society as a whole.
