Field Trip in Champasak, Laos

Abstract

The field trip in Champasak, Laos was conducted on 20 and 21 December 2017. There were two governmental institutions visited, including Champasak Public Health Department Office and Paksong Hospital.
 
1.Champasak Public Health Department Office
 
Champasak province is third largest province in Laos and situated in Southern part of Laos. Most of the populations are farmer and major income came from service sectors. In this province, there are 10 districts, 70 Health Centers, 643 villages and total population is 704,410 in 2016. Among them, 23 poor villages with 867 poor families. In order to improve the assess of Public Health Care among community especially low income family, new health insurance policy was implemented in 2017. The main contribution for this insurance came from tax. The amount for in-patient is 120 Bath and out-patient is 40 Bath. In this region, pregnant women do not need to pay any medical fees if they suffer related with pregnancy. Otherwise, she need to pay if she suffer any disease. Pregnant women who took 4 times ANC services (WHO guideline) is only 39 % in this province. Thus, health education activities should be implemented in this province.
 
2.Paksong Hospital
 
We went to Paksong Hospital to study health insurance and reproductive health systems of this hospital. Under the provision of health insurance, the coverage is 83,000 population where 70,063 out of 83,000 is female of reproductive age. After starting Universal Health Coverage, the number of patient increased twice and this hospital face inadequate human resource to provide services to public. According to situation that told by responsible person from this hospital, reproductive health knowledge of people in this region is very lack and they obey traditional culture.  Moreover, socioeconomic status in this community is not good as each family has at least four children and most of children suffer malnutrition. Therefore, medical health care providers need to do health promotion and prevention activities in this region.
