Abstract:
As globalization accelerates, working-age adults in developing countries like Thailand are leaving their homes in search of jobs that will allow them to support their families. These migrants who relocate for work often leave their children behind in the care of their own parents. We will provide preliminary findings from in-depth interviews with 47 grandparents from skipped generation households in three Thai provinces: Kanchanburi, Khon Kaen, and Phitsanulok. The presentation will focus on the following topics: the process of deciding that grandparents will care for their grandchildren, the role of the telephone in intergenerational relationships, intergenerational conflict, mutual support between grandparents and grandchildren, and the burdens as well as pleasures associated with the grandparenting role.
