Preliminary findings of a systematic review of perceptions of air pollution and behavioral responses

Seminar no. 1296
27 November 2024 Time 12:30 – 13:30 hrs.

Speaker: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Marc Voelker and Lect. Dr. Sarunya Sujaritpong

This presentation offers a preliminary exploration of people’s perceptions of air pollution and respective behavioral responses. Given the persistent environmental threat of air pollution to human health, the population’s role in adapting to this risk is crucial. Our research reviews and synthesizes studies on people’s perceptions of air pollution and respective behavioral responses, drawing on a database of 242 systematically selected research articles. Our initial findings untangle the complex causal relationships and linkages between the risk perception of air pollution and self-protective behaviors. Additionally, we explore to which extent people rely on different types of behavior to seek information about air pollution as well as the barriers to and facilitators of these types of behavior. The final outcome of our research is expected to be of great interest to relevant government institutions as it can inform the development of more effective and targeted risk communication campaigns and other suitable interventions.
