Abstract
International migrants comprise an important component of economic development in Thailand. Prior to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, there were approximately three million migrants working in Thailand, both in professional occupations and lower-skilled jobs, constituting about eight per cent of the labour force. Roughly 40 per cent of those were women. Migration trends since then are not clearly known for numerous reasons due to changing immigration policies, and state regulations concerning migrant workers. It is likely that the number of migrant workers in Thailand has most likely stagnated rather than increasing or decreasing significantly. Besides migrant workers, Thailand also hosts around 200,000 skill foreigners, many expats with marriage and retirement visas, about 90,000 asylum seekers from Myanmar displaced by conflicts, and up to 30,000 foreign students. In contrast, Thailand is the origin country of many labour workers and other groups of migrants. Thailand formally deploys about 100,000 migrant workers annually, the majority of whom go to Taiwan, South Korea, and Israel. Other major groups of Thai migrants include marriage and student migrants, mostly destined to Western countries and East Asia. This research will update trends and policies of the international migration in Thailand since the COVID-19 to reflect changing immigration policies, their impacts on both Thai and foreign migrants, and current trends. The research will apply a qualitative research method in the study by using in-depth-interview of migration experts, public officials, migrants, NGOs and other stakeholders to reflect their views and concerns.
