TPAK Organizes Meeting to Brainstorm Expert Opinions for Creating a Practical Manual to Promote Physical Activity in Schools Holistically (Whole-of-School Approach)

On March 27, 2024, Associate Professor Dr. Piyawat Katewongsa, Director of the Thailand Physical Activity Knowledge Development Center (TPAK), along with TPAK Research Team, facilitated a meeting at the Asawin Grand Convention Hotel, Phra In Room 2, Bangkok. The purpose of the meeting was to gather opinions from experts representing agencies involved in policy formulation and implementation in schools, both from the government and private sectors. During the event, experts exchanged opinions on the possibility of promoting physical activity in schools holistically (Whole-of-School Approach) and discussed the utilization of the manual.

Participants included representatives from various agencies such as the Physical Activity Division for Health, Department of Health, Ministry of Public Health, Arsomsilpa Institute, Prince Chulabhorn College of Medical Sciences, Faculty of Education – Chulalongkorn University, College of Sports Science and Technology – Mahidol University, Research Center for Promoting Safety and Preventing Injury in Children – Department of Pediatrics, Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital – Mahidol University, Thai Walking and Cycling Institute Foundation, Foundation for Child Development (MDD), Thailand Sports Association for the Disabled under Royal Patronage, Srinakharinwirot University Demonstration School, Pathumwan, Khon Kaen University Demonstration School Kindergarten Department, Ban Huai Khai Nao School (Petch-Pian Anusorn), Ban Nong Prue Community School, insKru page, and Play Academy Institute.

The objective of the meeting was to gather guidelines for schools, teachers, and stakeholders to apply the concept of promoting physical activity in schools holistically (Whole-of-School Approach) as outlined by the World Health Organization. These guidelines will help in planning and establishing school policies, as well as driving the implementation of plans to promote physical activity among Thai children and youth (2023 – 2030).

Suggestions received during the meeting will be synthesized and compiled into an operational manual for promoting physical activity in schools holistically (Whole-of-School Approach). This manual will be distributed to schools and stakeholders for implementation, aiming to enhance student health promotion efforts and promote physical activity in schools across Thailand.
