Abstract

Traumatic event such as COVID-19 pandemic is negatively affecting both physical and psychological wellbeing of older people. However, the extent to which COVID-19 pandemic affected on older people’s wellbeing is depend on resources, such as social support and resilience, available to manage the stressors. Some studies stated that for older people, perceived social support is more impactful than received social support in protecting their wellbeing. This study aims to investigate the pathway of how older adults’ perception related to social support availability affected their subjective wellbeing as well as assess the mediation effects of resilience and support seeking behavior on the relationship between perceived social support and subjective wellbeing. The study will be gathered data from older people living at community dwelling in three cities most impacted by COVID-19 pandemic. Indonesian version of Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) and Brief Resilient Coping Scale (BRCS) will be utilized to evaluate perceived social support and resilience to cope with hardship. While the Perceived Wellbeing Scale (PWB)will be employed to evaluate older people’s subjective wellbeing. To evaluate the reliability of MSPSS, BRCS and PWB, Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) will be applied. Furthermore, Structural Equation Model (SEM) will be used to investigate the pathways of how the relationship between perceived social support and subjective wellbeing mediated by resilience to cope with stressful event and support seeking behavior. This study is the first that assessing the relationship between perceived social support and older people’s subjective as well as investigate the protective effect of support seeking behavior and resilience among older people during Covid-19 pandemic in Indonesia. The findings are expected not only provide evidence regarding the importance of perceived social support on older adult’s subjective wellbeing but also able to offer practical implication for helping older adults protecting their wellbeing during stressful situation.
