Dementia Village: Where Everyone has Dementia

Dementia Village: Where Everyone has Dementia

ABSTRACT

With growing number of older population, the prevalence of older adults with dementia syndrome has risen simultaneously. Dementia has been underlined as one of the most common disorders in old-age (Sasat, Bryar, & Newens, 2001) and it also leads to disability in the later life. Thailand does not have enough health care facility that attempts to serve older adults with dementia. Though some Older Person Homes provide care service to older adults with dementia, but quality of facility does not meet the satisfaction. Therefore, this seminar would like to introduce audience to a new type of Older Person Home so-called “Dementia Village” which targets only older adults who experience dementia syndrome. Taking social approach into account, Dementia Village was firstly introduced by Dutch nursing home in 2009 with the concept of providing professional care to demented older adults along with maintaining lifestyle of older adult residents as before. The importance of living at Dementia Village has to meet the goals; residents being comfortable to the environment and surrounding, residents feel safety and secured, and residents can engage with other demented residents and care providers who share same backgrounds and interests. Additionally, Dementia Village aims older adult residents to live normal life, lead their lives on their own decision and choice, and not being seen as a stranger in the society they belong. Finally, I wish to push forward and see qualified facility such like the Dementia Village in Thai society.
