Research Team Visits Three Provinces to Study the Role of “Intermediaries” Linking Farmers and the Public Sector Toward Sustainable Community Food Systems

Between October 1–8, 2025, the research team from the project “Analyzing the Roles of Local Administrative Organizations and Intermediaries” conducted field studies in Buriram, Prachinburi, and Sa Kaeo Provinces to explore mechanisms and models of “intermediaries” that play a crucial role in connecting small-scale farmers with public institutions within local food systems.

In Buriram Province, led by Ms. Narumon Charoenjai and Mr. Phongsak Muensakda, the team examined the role of the Lam Nang Rong Subdistrict Administrative Organization (SAO), which supports farmers through safe vegetable production promotion, production standard training, and a direct procurement system. The SAO purchases produce to supply seven local Child Development Centers (CDCs), creating a community-based food system model that adds value to agricultural products and distributes income within the community.

In Prachinburi Province, the team studied the Khao Mai Kaew Farmers’ Group, which acts as an intermediary linking local farmers with Chao Phraya Abhaibhubejhr Hospital. The group oversees product collection and management, quality control, transportation, and financial coordination. This collaboration represents a key mechanism under the “From Farm to Hospital” initiative, integrating agriculture, public health, and social markets.

In Sa Kaeo Province, led by Lect. Dr. Sarunya Sujaritpong and Ms. Kanya Apipornchaisakul, the team examined the role of the MOA Thai Foundation, serving as a “developmental intermediary” connecting safe-vegetable producers with Sa Kaeo Crown Prince Hospital. The foundation assists farmers in achieving production standards, links farmer groups with the hospital, and verifies the safety of food ingredients from production sources.

Findings from all three provinces highlight that “intermediaries” are not merely facilitators of trade but also serve as essential mechanisms fostering collaboration among the agricultural sector, public agencies, and civil society. Their contributions strengthen the development of safe, fair, and sustainable community food systems.
