Ethical Issues in Social Science Research No. 8

On May 17, 2024, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chalermpol Chamchan, Director of the Institute for Population and Social Research, delivered the opening speech for the research ethics training on “Ethical Issues in Social Science Research No. 8,” organized by the Research Ethics Committee. The training aimed to disseminate guidelines and important issues regarding human research ethics and to create awareness of research ethics among trainees. Prof. Emeritus Dr. Pramote Prasartkul spoke about the origins of human research ethics and researcher ethics. Associate Professor Dr. Chai Podhisita and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Teeranong Sakulsri discussed many interesting topics, including:

  1. Important research ethics principles in social sciences, behavioral science, and humanities.
  2. Research in vulnerable groups and confidentiality.
  3. Process for requesting consent from volunteers/criteria for evaluating consent requests from volunteers.
  4. Potential benefits and risks from social science research.

The discussions were moderated by Associate Professor Dr. Charamporn Holumyong.

Additionally, external speakers discussed various interesting topics:

  • Asst. Prof. Dr. Pornchai Chanyagorn, Director of the Personal Data Administration Center, Office of the President, Mahidol University, participated in the discussion on personal data sharing agreements.
  • Asst. Prof. Sotarat Thammaboosadee discussed the PDPA and the use of personal data in social science research.
  • Asst. Prof. Dr.Sutithep Siripipattanakul from the Faculty of Education, Kasetsart University, addressed ethical issues in the use of information for research.

The program was overseen by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sirinya Phulkerd.

In the afternoon, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sirinan Kittisuksathit shared her work experiences and discussed mechanisms and procedures for conducting human research ethics and preparing researchers for ethics approval. Group practice activities followed, with the Institute’s Human Research Ethics Committee available to provide advice at room 101, Institute for Population and Social Research, Mahidol University.
