Thailand as a Safe Home: Refugee Crisis and Solutions

On April 30, 2024, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., the Institute for Population and Social Research at Mahidol University participated in the seminar titled ‘Thailand as a Safe Home: Refugee Crisis and Solutions.’ Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sureeporn Punpuing from the Mahidol Migration Center (Institute for Population and Social Research) and Dr. Mary Rose Sarausad from the Asian Institute of Technology joined to discuss the refugee screening process in Thailand, focusing on its challenges. The session was moderated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Krittaya Archavanitkul from the Institute for Population and Social Research.

Other speakers also addressed various issues. Mr. Somchai Homla-or, President and Human Rights Lawyer at the Human Rights Development Foundation (HRDF), discussed human rights violations in Thailand. Mr. Chawaratt Chawarangkul from the Thailand Myanmar Response talked about illegal detention and deportation law. Mr. Siwawong Suktawee from the Transnational Population Organization Network (MWG) discussed policy and parliamentary subcommittee matters. Dr. Sun Aung from the New Myanmar Foundation discussed what Thailand can do at SEA-Junction, located on the 4th floor of the Art Gallery at the Bangkok Culture Center (BACC).
