On October 30, 2023, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., the Mahidol Migration Study Center-Joint Research Unit (MMC-JRU), in collaboration with the Institute for Population and Social Research at Mahidol University, the Faculty of Humanities at Chiang Mai University, and the Network of Migrant Population Organizations (MWG), organized a meeting titled “Negotiation on Employment Policy Reform for Migrant Workers and Protection of Migrant Workers in Agriculture.” This meeting served as a forum for gathering opinions from various sectors related to the employment of migrant workers in the agricultural sector.
The event featured welcome speeches by Associate Professor Dr. Aree Jampaklay, the Director of the Institute for Population and Social Research at Mahidol University, Ms. Rebecca Napier Moore from the International Labor Organization (ILO), and Ms. Pharanee Phuprasert, the Director of the Office Supporting the Health of Specific Population Groups at the Thai Health Promotion Foundation (Bureau 9). The meeting took place at The Sukosol Hotel in Bangkok.
Over 50 attendees participated in the meeting, during which Ms. Kanchana Poolkaew, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Labor Protection and Welfare, delivered a special lecture on three key legal and policy issues affecting the protection and social welfare provisions for migrant workers. Additionally, Associate Professor Dr. Sudarat Musikawong, from the Institute for Population and Social Research at Mahidol University and the Mahidol Migration Center-MMC-JRU Joint Research Unit, presented on the topic of hiring migrant workers in agriculture, covering employment procedures, work permission requests, and policy proposals. The program was facilitated by Associate Professor Dr. Teeranong Sakulsri from the Population and Social Research Institute at Mahidol University.
