LEVEL AND DETERMINANT FACTORS OF ACTIVE AGEING OF ELDERLY IN THAILAND

ABSTRACT

Active ageing is the global goal of present ageing world for meeting the challenges of elderly and for improving their quality of life. Thailand has become an ageing society and is going to increase her elderly population but level and determinant factors of active ageing in Thailand is not known clearly. To reasearch on insight of prevailing active ageing situation of elderly (aged 60 years and older) and its associated determiant factors in Thailand, data have been used from a national sample and from an area based sample. Exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis have been used for finding and validating determinant factors of active ageing. Active ageing index (AAI- ranges from 0 to 1) has been estimated and made comparison of AAI of elderly for various regions and for urban-rural. Also, attempt has been made to find the direction of relationship of AAI with important indicator variables. This study found separate factor structure (relationships of indicator variables with determinant factors)  of active ageing for female and male elderly and also factor structure of active ageing from different survey produced different factor structure. Each factor structure of active ageing in national sample and in area based sample constituted with six determinant factors.
Female elderly in national and area based sample had AAI as 0.64 and 0.43 respectively, where as values of AAI for male elderly in national and area based sample found as 0.61 and 0.50 respectively. AAI of elderly is lower in Central region (lowest in Bangkok) compare to North, Northeast and South region. This study found no significant difference in overall active ageing level of elderly in urban and rural areas. Policies for elderly to improving health, economic solvency, education, smoking behavior change, participation in work and in society would be beneficial for promoting active ageing in Thailand.
