The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is becoming an evidence-based organization. The Migration Data and Research Unit (MDRU) at the Thailand country office was established to ensure that migration-related data and evidence are used to inform our decision making. Its main goal is to provide accurate and timely information that helps IOM, governments, and partners make better decisions about migration. MDRU works on collecting, analyzing, and sharing data to better understand migration trends, why people move, and how this impacts communities of destination as well as those who remain behind. The unit develops tools like flow monitoring and multisectoral assessment of needs to ensure data is reliable and consistent across different areas. Collaboration is a key part of MDRU’s work. This includes partnering with the Thailand National Statistical Office, research institutions, and other organizations to build knowledge and improve data systems. It also means sharing microdata to help researchers leverage existing information for deeper analysis. By combining technical skills with field experience, MDRU helps improve programming and policy, strengthen humanitarian responses, and raise awareness of migration issues. As migration continues to change, MDRU remains focused on providing the information needed to support safe, orderly, and regular migration.
