On September 11, 2025, IPSR, Mahidol University, in collaboration with the Thai Health Promotion Foundation (ThaiHealth), organized an academic seminar on “Understanding, Addressing, and Preventing Gender-Based Safety Issues in the Private Sector Workplace”. This seminar was part of the project “Study of the Situation and Development of Guidelines and Training Modules for the Prevention and Management of Gender-Based Violence in Private Sector Workplaces.” The project is led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Suchada Thaweesit, IPSR, Mahidol University.
The seminar was opened by Asst. Prof. Dr. Nucharapon Liangruenrom, Deputy Director for Academic Affairs, IPSR, Mahidol University, with welcome remarks and objectives delivered by Ms. Porranee Pooprasert, Assistant Manager of ThaiHealth and Acting Director of the Bureau of Health Promotion for Specific Populations (Bureau 9). The event took place at TK. Palace Hotel & Convention, Chaengwattana Road, Bangkok.
Over 120 representatives from government agencies, private sector organizations, labor networks, and human rights groups attended. The seminar addressed the issue of workplace gender-based violence and harassment, which has drawn global attention following the International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention No. 190 on eliminating violence and harassment in the world of work. The event aimed to build awareness, strengthen understanding, and advance mechanisms for prevention and response within Thailand’s private sector in alignment with international standards.
The seminar featured panel discussions and knowledge exchange sessions with scholars, policymakers, and civil society representatives on key topics, including:
- Sexual Harassment and Gender-Based Violence in the Workplace – Assoc. Prof. Dr. Suchada Thaweesit (IPSR, Mahidol University) and Ms. Jittima Panuetcha (President, Gender Diversity Network and Manager, Women’s Health Promotion Program).
- Policy Directions on Workplace Gender-Based Violence in the Private Sector – Ms. Supatra Nakapew (National Human Rights Commission of Thailand), Ms. Wannee Wajullavateelert (Department of Labour Protection and Welfare, Ministry of Labour), Ms. Chananat Wilairat (Department of Women’s Affairs and Family Development, Ministry of Social Development and Human Security), and Ms. Siriwan Romchattrathong (Secretary-General, Employers’ Confederation of Thailand – ECOT). Moderator: Dr. Waraporn Chaemsanit (Women’s Health Promotion Program).
- Current Situation of Workplace Gender-Based Violence in the Private Sector – Assoc. Prof. Dr. Suchada Thaweesit and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aree Jampaklay (IPSR, Mahidol University).
- Support Mechanisms for Survivors – Ms. Naina Supapueng (Foundation for SOGI Rights and Justice), Ms. Apantri Charoensak (Vice President for Women and Youth, Confederation of Thai Labour), and Mr. Manas Kosol (President, Council of Thai Trade Unions and Social Security Workers Network). Moderator: Dr. Chanette Tinam (Faculty of Communication Arts, Chulalongkorn University).
- Presentation of Draft E-learning Module and Guidelines for Workplace GBV Prevention and Response (MU ZeroGBV in Workplace) – Assoc. Prof. Dr. Suchada Thaweesit (IPSR, Mahidol University). Moderator: Ms. Jittima Panuetcha (President, Gender Diversity Network).
This seminar provided not only a platform for sharing knowledge and best practices across sectors but also marked an important step in advancing labor standards in Thailand’s private sector, aligning with global expectations on human rights, workplace safety, and gender equality.
