‘Let’s make Thailand a better place for children to grow up’

This study investigates the interplaying effects of the environments at home (1st place), school (2nd place), and places other than home and school (offline and online) (3rd place) on the generation Z–Alpha’s attitudes and behaviors. This generation, born during 2004–2023, is the youngest generation who will grow up to lead the society in the coming decades. Their characters and quality will determine the ways of the Thai’s future society and economy. The findings from this study will be the important inputs to the design and suggestion of the relevant interventions.

About the study

‘The Child Ecology of Thai Z-Alpha Generation’ highlights the importance of children as the future of the society and reflects the holistic environments that surround and influence their characters and quality. The Z generation covers those who were born during 2004-2023. The first half of the generation that was already born is referred to as ‘Z-Alpha’ and is the focus of this study. The ways they grow up and are groomed have everything to do with the ways they live and lead the society in the near future. This study identifies 3 sets of environment (ecology); home (1st place), school (2nd place), and places other than home and school (3rd place) which include both offline and online places. These 3 places of the 21st century possess natures different from the previous one. This is how the child ecology concept and the theory of generations come into lending the lens to investigate the ways that this youngest generation is growing up.

The samples of the study are 1,500 Z-Alpha children, 1,500 parents, and 1,500 teachers. The study is conducted nationwide including 5 areas of Bangkok and metropolitan, northern, eastern, northeastern, and southern regions. Each studied region covers both urban and suburban areas. The participating schools and children are randomized and approached for consent. The results of the study will be used for policy advocacy aiming to enhance our children’s capacity and quality of their childhood.

The instruments of the study are of three sets: (1) for the interview with children, (2) with teachers, and (3) with parents. These instruments have been carefully developed by a team of demographers, sociologists, anthropologist, and psychologists, and obtains the ethical approval no. COA. No. 2018/12-354 by the Institutional Review Board of the Institute for Population and Social Research, Mahidol University.
