Migration in the Context of Climate Change in South-East and Central Asia: Research Methods and Approaches to Impact Assessment

Between 26–27 November 2025, the Mahidol Migration Center – Joint Research Unit (MMC-JRU), Institute for Population and Social Research (IPSR), Mahidol University, in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sudarat Musikawong, organized the international training workshop titled “Migration in the Context of Climate Change in South-East and Central Asia: Research Methods and Approaches to Impact Assessment.” The workshop was supported by funding from IOM.

The event was honored by the participation of the following distinguished speakers:

  4. Associate Professor Dr. Marc VOELKER – IPSR, Mahidol University
  5. Associate Professor Dr. Marina KHRAMOVA – RUDN University and Institute for Demographic Research, FCTAS RAS (Moscow, Russian Federation)
  6. Professor Dr. Kenichi OHASHI – Rikkyo University (Tokyo, Japan)

The workshop provided researchers and policymakers with in-depth knowledge and practical demonstrations on methodologies for studying the impacts of climate change on demographic and migration processes using case studies from South-East and Central Asia. It also aimed to identify proactive adaptation strategies undertaken by states and societies, including retraining and reskilling populations for emerging professions in response to climate-related challenges in these regions.

A total of 9 participants joined the training onsite at Srabua Room (109), IPSR, while 12 participants joined online, representing 14 countries.
