Mahidol University Lecturer Joins International Workshop on Demographic Analysis and Aging

Dr. Pattaphol Yuktadatta, Lecturer at the Institute for Population and Social Research (IPSR), Mahidol University, participated in the intensive Training Workshop on Demographic Analysis with Applications to Aging and Health held from 3–21 November 2025 at the College of Population Studies, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok.

Organised by the College of Population Studies (CPS) in collaboration with the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), the three-week workshop brought together early- to mid-career researchers, lecturers, statisticians, and professionals from across the Asia-Pacific to strengthen their skills in advanced demographic methods. The program has run for three decades and has trained approximately 400 participants from 28 countries.

This year’s workshop was led by Professor Sergei Scherbov, a globally recognised expert in demographic computer applications, aging research, and population modelling. A Distinguished Emeritus Research Scholar at IIASA and Affiliated Professor at CPS, Professor Scherbov has authored more than 200 academic articles and has extensive experience teaching demographic methods worldwide.

Over the three weeks, participants engaged in six hours of daily lectures and hands-on sessions, complemented by independent assignments. The curriculum covered a wide array of topics, including:

  • demographic fundamentals and age-structure analysis
  • mortality and fertility measures
  • construction and interpretation of life tables
  • population projections and age-pattern models
  • advanced Excel techniques, VBA basics, and data presentation skills
  • introduction to R for demographic analytics
  • applications of generative AI (including ChatGPT) for research workflows and coding assistance.

A particular focus was placed on modern approaches to understanding population aging, informed by the book Prospective Longevity: A New Vision of Population Aging, published by Harvard University Press.

The workshop provided a valuable platform for skill-building, peer learning, and cross-country knowledge exchange, especially in light of rapid demographic transitions and aging populations in the region. Participants who completed course requirements received a Certificate of Participation, with the opportunity to earn a Certificate of Accomplishment through examination.

Dr. Pattaphol Yuktadatta,  joined the workshop as part of his ongoing work in demographic analysis, aging research, and methodological training at Mahidol University, contributing to Thailand’s growing capacity in applied demographic sciences.
