On July 1, 2024, the Institute for Population and Social Research at Mahidol University organized the 18th National Academic Conference “Population and Society 2024” under the theme “Population and Sustainability: Key Policy Highlight.” The purpose of the conference was to serve as a forum for presenting data, research, discussions, and exchanges of both academic and policy perspectives from lecturers and researchers of the Institute, external experts, and participants from various fields on issues interconnected between population challenges and the sustainable development agenda.
This year, we were honored to have Asst. Prof. Dr. Auemphorn Mutchimwong, Mahidol University Vice President for Finance, preside over the opening ceremony, along with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chalermpol Chamchan, Director of the Institute for Population and Social Research, who welcomed the participants. Dr. Suvit Maesincee, Chairman of the Youth in Change Platform, gave a special lecture on “Civilization at the Crossroads: Sustainability & Our Human Future.”
On this occasion, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chalermpol Chamchan, Director of the Institute for Population and Social Research at Mahidol University, joined the roundtable discussion on “Sustainable Development and Population and Social Policy” together with Asst. Prof. Chon Bunnag, Director of the Center for Sustainable Development Goals Research and Support (SDG Move), Mr. Promboon Panitchpakdi, Secretary-General of the Raks Thai Foundation, and Ms. Worawan Plikamin, Deputy Secretary-General of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC).
The conference presented three main academic papers on dimensions related to sustainable development: birth, child, and family; health, food, and environment; and migration of people between civilizations. The conference was attended by executives and lecturers from the Institute for Population and Social Research at Mahidol University, as well as distinguished guests from various sectors. In addition, there were 13 poster presentations of research and an awards ceremony for the video clip contest on the topic “What Population Policy Do the New Generation Want to See?” under the concept of “Population and Sustainability: Key Policy Issues” at the Udompat Prachasomkhon Room (101), 1st floor, Institute for Population and Social Research, Mahidol University, Salaya, and online.
