The prevalence of overweight and obesity is increasing worldwide, including Thailand. Being overweight or obese increases the risk of developing non communicable diseases (NCDs) over the life course. In its ‘Best Buy’ interventions, The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends taxation on sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) to prevent and control obesity and related NCDs. Thailand has legislated an SSB tax with 4 phases, starting in 2017 and scheduled to reach its full effect by 2025. The health and economic impact of SSB taxes has not been explored in Thailand.
