Objectives:
Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) is a priority area UNICEF. UNICEF East Asia and the Pacific Regional Office has embarked on a research initiative to define how MHPSS can most effectively be delivered for children and adolescents in the region. In particular, this project seeks to define what is required across key sectors (social welfare, health, education) to ensure MHPSS for children and adolescents, and how this model can be implemented in our region. This entails identifying:
- the tiered and multi-sectoral package of services required for child and adolescent MHPSS that can effectively meet their needs and be accessed;
- the systems, structures and resources – financial and human – needed to deliver these services;
- multi-sectoral responsibilities – health, social welfare and education, in particular – and the role of other relevant ministries/agencies, NGOs, communities and the private sector; and
- the legislative, policy, institutional, capacity building steps required to ensure a mental health system, with necessary resources, is in place in the short-, medium- and long-term.
Output
- A snapshot understanding of the mental health situation for children and adolescents
- Mapping of existing MHPSS systems and services for children and adolescents
- Analysis of the gaps between the conceptual framework and existing MHPSS systems and services for children and adolescents and the causes of those gaps
- Country specific recommendations and opportunities for strengthening the systems for the provision of multi-tiered MHPSS
